Solid-State's 2021 Patent Pileup: Who Was Really In the Race
A single year of solid-electrolyte grants names the serious players — Toyota, Samsung, Ford, QuantumScape — and hints at how far apart their approaches were.
Solid-state batteries replace the flammable liquid electrolyte with a solid one, promising more energy and less fire risk. In 2021 the idea was still pre-commercial, but the patent record had already sorted the field into serious players and tourists. A year of grants is a useful roster.Toyota's US11196082B2 claims an anode mixture and the all-solid-state lithium-ion cell built around it — Toyota has long been the most prolific solid-state filer, and the grant fits its pattern of deep, methodical IP. Samsung's US11114691B2 claims a sulfide-based solid electrolyte and its preparation. Ford's US11069920B2 describes a solid-state design with a mixed ionic and electronic conductor. The Korea Institute of Industrial Technology's US10886560B2 covers an LLZO-based ceramic-electrolyte cell. The strategic read is in the divergence. These four grants represent at least three different electrolyte families — sulfide, polymer and oxide ceramic — and they do not converge. When an emerging field's patents scatter across incompatible approaches, it means nobody has won the architecture argument yet, and the commercial timeline is still uncertain. The assignee data around these filings also surfaces QuantumScape, the most-watched solid-state pure-play, alongside the incumbents. That mix — a venture-funded specialist filing next to Toyota and Samsung — is the competitive shape of the field: deep-pocketed incumbents hedging against a startup that bet everything on the chemistry. For off-take watchers, the lesson is patience. A scattered patent landscape means no supplier can yet promise volume on a single proven design, so the supply agreements that would normally signal commercialization are absent. The IP is real; the commitments are not yet.The CPC code to watch is H01M 10/0562, the office's label for solid-electrolyte cells. Its rising count across multiple incompatible chemistries in 2021 is the clearest single signal that solid-state was a real race — and that it was far from over.
